デンマークの動物園が、同系交配を防ぐためキリンを一頭殺処分し、さらにその様子を解体し一般客に見せていたというショッキングなニュースが9日世界中を駆け巡りました。観客に見せる必要はあったのかという疑問もあるが、動物園側によると「キリンがどんな姿をしているか見てもらうにはいい機会」とコメントしている。その中でもっぱら興味を持っていたのはこどもたちだ。

こちらが解体されたキリンの様子だ。解体されてしまうともはやそれは何の肉であるのかどうかも分からない状態となっているが、足元にキリンの模様が確認できることから「キリンの肉」であることを俄かにうかがわせている。観客としては大勢の家族が集まっていたが、最前線を陣取っているのはもっぱら男の子たちである。当然と言えば当然なのかもしれないが、女の子にはショックが大きいのだろうか。
―殺す必要はあったのかと疑問の声も
そもそもキリンを殺す必要があったのかという声も。しかもキリンはその場で殺され、そして解体された。しかも子供たちの目の前で。
同系交配の防止のためであればほかの手法もあったのではないかという声もあるが、弱肉強食の世界で生きる動物本来の状態を知ってもらうにはよい機会なのかもしれない。
